The Brief
NRMA (National Roads and Motorists’ Association), with partial funding from the Australian Government’s Driving the Nation Program, deployed fast EV chargers at sites along Australia’s national highways, aiming to provide fast charging approximately every 150 km between capital cities.
For sites with limited grid capacity, the NRMA selected eLumina’s Australian-designed D1 Battery Integrated Electric Vehicle Charger (BIEVC) technology to support fast charging in regional and remote locations.
The Problem
Many charging station sites in regional and remote locations are constrained by limited and/or unstable grid power supply. Any charging solution needed to accommodate scenarios where multiple chargers may be in use simultaneously while operating within available grid capacity.
Our Solution
- Supply of 17 x D1 Battery Integrated Electric Vehicle Chargers (BIEVCs)
- Integrated 193 kWh battery energy storage
- Operates with a low grid input requirement of just 10–40 kW
- Australian-based warranty support and maintenance training
Deployment
The D1 charger, with its integrated 193 kWh battery, provides DC fast charging at locations where grid capacity is limited, helping reduce the need for significant electrical infrastructure upgrades.
Outcome
The deployment of eLumina’s D1 BIEVC technology supports the objectives of the NRMA’s Driving the Nation Program by enabling fast charging at selected regional and remote locations with constrained grid capacity. The battery-integrated design helps minimise the need for costly grid upgrades while supporting the continued expansion of Australia’s EV charging network.
